Honoring Our Eagle Scout
May 18, 2010When my son was just five years old, I enrolled him in the Cub Scouts. I was never a scout myself, but with the ubiquitous nature of technology, I thought it necessary that he be exposed to the elements and learn some rudimentary survival skills. At the time I first signed him up, I assumed that the scouts would be a nice hobby for a few years and then he would grow out of it. However, the scouts became one of the paramount activities in his life, and I am proud to say that he will be receiving the rank of Eagle Scout this weekend.
In order to commemorate this crowning achievement, my wife and I wanted to get him a gift that reflected his time spent in the scouts. Like most people who stick with the program for many years, he has developed an affinity for the outdoors and frequently ventures into the wild for camping, hunting and other expeditions. He already is well stocked with gear, so we decided to get him a bone handled knife, which will serve more as a collector’s item than a pragmatic piece of equipment.
Great for an everyday user…..
May 14, 2010There are many opinions on what knife is best. Spring Assisted Knives can be great if you need the blade out in a hurry. They are not as fast as automatics but, very close. Many older knife users have not come across this style of knife very easily.
If you know how to use an assisted opening folder, you can do a lot with very little. Many people have the mis-conception that this style of knife is not safe for the general public. That is completely false if you are careful. Look at it this way, a knife is sharp, if you are careful and treat it like a tool, it will not cut you at all.

Billy and his knife in the woods…..
May 5, 2010
Billy was a young kid around 13, he had gone hunting with his father before. One day Billy and his dad Ted, went into the deep woods of the Oregon wilderness. There they stumbled across a large brown bear, before Billy knew what was happening his dad was being attacked by the brown bear. So Billy having his great quality assisted opening knife drew it out of his pocket and stabbed the bear repeatedly in the gut, the bear after letting out a few loud roars tumbled over and past away suddenly.
When Billy got his wits together he got close to his father to access the damage. Luckily his dad Ted had only suffered some minor scraps and only one medium sized laceration to the arm. Billy got his dad up off the ground, got there gear together and they went went off to the closest medical facility to get some care for his father’s wounds. His dad pulled through and they both vowed to be extra special alert the next time they went into the vast wilderness.
Overlooked Fishing Gear
May 4, 2010Now that fishing season is officially underway, my son and I will be spending a lot more time on the water in the coming months. Last weekend, we spent all of Saturday and the better part of Sunday angling at one of our favorite lakes, which is secluded in the woods a few miles from our house. Every year we invest in some new lures and fishing tackle, but we often neglect some of our peripheral items.
On Sunday afternoon, we were preparing some of the fish we just caught when I realized my knife was doing an insufficient job; the blade was so dull it could barely cut through the flesh of the trout. We struggled with the blunt blade for the rest of the day, but when we got home, I immediately went online to search for discount folding knives. Luckily, I was able to find a store that processed our order quickly, so our new knife will be here before next weekend.
Items for good defense!
May 3, 2010
When your out for a walk, or taking a scenic jog, or even going back to your car from a really great movie, sometimes thugs/robbers like to prey on the unknowing victim. This is why most people need a good knife that is an assisted opening blade style. Assisted Opening knives are great because when you need the blade out quick, you just flip the finger stud on the back of the handle and there it is.
It is really hard to carry an automatic knife these days for so many legal reasons. On the other hand, assisted opening knives are virtually legal in all states, except for a few. This type of knife in turn, gives you peace of mind when you absolutely need it.
